Robert Morris Elgin

(1825 – 1913)

Robert Morris Elgin was born in Tennessee on September 25, 1825, and moved near Brenham, Texas in 1841. In 1848 he served under General Zachary Taylor in the Mexican-American War. After being raised as Master Mason July 28, 1849, he became Worshipful Master of Austin Lodge No. 12 in 1854, DDGM in 1858, and Grand Master of Texas in 1865. In 1866 he was installed as Grand Commander of the Knights Templar, and in 1897 as Grand Treasurer of the same. In 1865 he was elected as Thrice Illustrious Grand Master over the Assembly of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters.

The City of Elgin has been named in his honor.

He died on July 9, 1913, and buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
