DESCRIPTION:The first Grand Lodge was formed on 24 June the feast day of John the Baptist in 1717. This may arise from a very old tradition\, since the Baptist appears to have been regarded as the patron of stonemasons in continental Europe during the Middle Ages. The guild of masons and carpenters attached to Cologne Cathedral was known as the Fraternity of St. John the Baptist. The earliest surviving record of Grand Lodge of Ireland installing a Grand Master is dated to 24 June 1725. DESCRIPTION:Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days\, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar\, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches\, called a menorah (or hanukkiah). One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shamash (Hebrew: _________\, “attendant”). Each night\, one additional candle is lit by the shamash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival.ÊOther Hanukkah festivities include singing Hanukkah songs\, playing the game of dreidel and eating oil-based foods\, such as latkes and sufganiyot\, and dairy foods. DESCRIPTION:The Evangelist is particularly associated with Scottish lodges. The Lodge of Edinburgh was associated with the aisle of St. John the Evangelist in St. Giles Cathedral from the 15th century.ÊThe Grand Lodge of All England\, and its predecessor\, the Ancient Society of Freemasons in the City of York\, elected and installed their President\, then from 1725 their Grand Master on the day of the Evangelist\, and in London the Antient Grand Lodge of England elected their new Grand Masters on the same day. When the Antients and the Moderns (the Premier Grand Lodge) eventually came together in the United Grand Lodge of England\, it was on the Feast of the Evangelist in 1813.

DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day\, also called St. Valentine’s Day\, holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Given their similarities\, it has been suggested that the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia\, held in mid-February. The festival\, which celebrated the coming of spring\, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century\, Pope Gelasius I forbid the celebration of Lupercalia and is sometimes attributed with replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day\, but the true origin of the holiday is vague at best. Healthy adults are expected to observe the fast. During Ramadan\, the fast helps believers purify their hearts\, renew their faith\, seek forgiveness\, and increase self-discipline. It is also a time to focus on what is most important and positive in a believer’s life. \nThe Ramadan fast is absolute. Each day\, from the time of Suhoor (the final meal before sunrise) until Iftar (the meal to break the fast)\, Muslims abstain from all food and water. Nothing may be consumed during these hours. Believers are also encouraged to abstain from anger and to show compassion. Fasting can be a way to increase awareness of Allah and to be more aware of the plight of those who are poor and suffering.
