About:
Celebrating our 29th year of this great Mathews tradition!
Octoberama is our annual family carnival in support of Mathews Elementary. Hosting games, live music, food and a silent auction, the event is a day full of fun and friendship for our community. Planned and executed by PTA volunteers, Octoberama regularly draws over 500 people from the school and surrounding downtown area. This year’s carnival will be held on October 28, 2017 from 11am to 3pm at Mathews.
Mathews Elementary is a special school with a deep history in the Austin community that stretches back to its beginnings 100 years ago. Today the school serves over 400 students from 40 different countries speaking 20 different languages, making it the most ethnically diverse school in the Austin Independent School District. But ethnic diversity isn’t the only hallmark of the school. Nestled in downtown Austin, Mathews also has an incredibly diverse economic population. We are a Title 1 school with over half our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch programs, and we care for students living in the Austin Children’s Shelter and downtown homeless shelters. The Mathews community does what we can to help these children with not only their academic needs but by lending support to families with grocery cards, holiday gifts and counseling support. Octoberama is our biggest fundraiser and the money gained from the event goes toward these children and to pay the salaries of our technology and math teaching specialists along with teacher training programs, library resources, updating class equipment and more. Our goal this year is $40,000.
